Perry Green of Anchorage is the most decorated Alaska player in the history of the World Series of Poker, and Wednesday he added another high finish at the annual event in Las Vegas.
Green, a retired furrier who in the mid- to-late 1970s won three bracelets as an event champion, finished ninth in a field of 936 players in a Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better tournament.
He collected $18,233.
That's the most money won by an Alaskan in any single event this year in the WSOP, which features 62 separate tournaments and closes with the main event, a No-Limit Hold 'em tournament that is considered the most prestigious title in the game.
Green has "cashed,'' or won money, in 24 World Series events in his career. The event he cashed in Wednesday required a $1,500 buy-in, or entry fee.
Four other Alaskans have recently cashed at the WSOP, raising to 14 the number of Alaskans who have cashed this year.
Three of those cashes came in the Seniors No-Limit Hold 'em Championship, which featured a $1,000 buy-in and drew 4,407 players. Steve Waldron of Anchorage finished 91st to earn $4,045, Young Ji of Anchorage finished 104th to gain $3,411 and Michael Brain of Anchorage took 303rd to collect $2,181.
Ji's cash was his second of the tournament and gave him winnings of $13,675. Greg Hobson of Anchorage, who won a WSOP event last year, has also cashed twice this year to earn $18,925.
Also cashing recently was Brandon Blake of Palmer, who finished 127th among 2,108 players in a $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold 'em event and won $2,362.
