NEW AND IMPROVED BALLFIELDS UNVEILED AT RUTH ARCAND PARK
Senator Kevin Meyer throws out the first pitch at statewide baseball tournament for kids
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Baseball is still a cherished American pastime in the land of the midnight sun.
Nearly 600 youth were served by Abbott O' Rabbit this year after a major facilities upgrade made possible by $400,000 in Capital project money sponsored by State Senator Kevin Meyer, the Anchorage Park Foundation, and numerous volunteers. Improvements include handicap accessible trails to the terraced fields.
What better way to celebrate the new improvements then with a baseball tournament! Teams from Kodiak, Homer, Kenai, Soldotna, Palmer, Eagle River and throughout the city of Anchorage are competing for the opportunity to play in the Wrangell, AK State tournament later this month and then on to San Bernadino, CA for the western division championship.
AOR League President and All-stars coach Matt Subitch is proud of the improvements, mostly because he knows they will make an impact on the lives of his players. "This is a wonderful experience for the youth in all these Alaskan communities. The players learn life skills from baseball that they will use throughout the rest of their lives. They also make and develop long lasting friendships with children outside of their circle of friends."
Come on out and join other south central Little League fans. The final District 1 game is 6:30PM on Wednesday, July 18, at Abbott O' Rabbit's Ruth Arcand fields (corner of Lake Otis & O'Malley). Says Subitch, "District 1 in Anchorage always sends competitive teams to the Little League World Series. This is one of the most exciting sports events during our long Alaska summer days."
