Young jammers
Students with the Alaska Jazz Workshop performed at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival this spring. You can catch them locally 7 p.m. Saturday at Organic Oasis, 2610 Spenard Road when the Summer 2013 Alaska Jazz Workshop Student Ensemble plays hot jazz, funk and Latin. Admission is $5, free for kids under 12.
Booktalks at UAA
Homer photographer/author Tom Reed will present his book "Moved By a Mountain: Inspiration from an Alpine View in Alaska" at 4 p.m. Monday at the UAA Campus Bookstore. Reed has spent years looking out his window at the Kenai Mountains on the south side of Kachemak Bay and explores their magnificence in pictures and prose in the new book. The event is free and so is the parking in south lot, the west campus central lot, the sports lot, and the sports NW lot. Kris Farmen and Martha Amore, two of the three writers whose novellas are featured in "Weathered Edge" will also give a presentation at the bookstore at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Family fracas
Robert Hale, aka "Papa Pilgrim," and his immense family grabbed headlines as a frontier clan from another era fighting the modern bureaucracy to fend for themselves in the remote Wrangell Mountains. But their epic story concealed a dark side of con games, fraud and child abuse. Tom Kizzia, who covered the saga for the Daily News, has written a book, "Pilgrim's Wilderness." He will discuss the book and the family 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Anchorage Museum. Admission is free. Use the Seventh Avenue entrance.
