Boy, 11, struck and badly hurt trying to ride bike across Glenn Highway

An 11-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Monday night after he was struck by a vehicle while trying to ride his bike across the Glenn Highway in Muldoon, Anchorage police said.

The boy, who was not identified, was traveling south to north and was was struck in the inbound lane near the Muldoon exit, according to police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro. Police received the report at 7:41 p.m., she said.

The boy was taken to the hospital and was still listed in critical condition on Tuesday morning.

Another boy was also riding a bike with him across the Glenn Highway and wasn't hurt, police said.

The accident happened near the Tikahtnu Commons shopping center.

"Police have learned that some people attempt to use a man-made pathway in the area near the Tikahtnu Commons to cross the highway," Castro said in an email. She urged people to use designated bike paths.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly indicated the boy was struck in the outbound lane of the Glenn Highway after crossing the inbound lane. He was traveling the other direction.
