Hearing on proposed debris landfill in Chugiak postponed

A municipal hearing scheduled today on a conditional-use permit for a controversial construction and debris landfill near Chugiak has been postponed until October.

The municipal planning and zoning commision will hear the issue at its Oct. 7 meeting. The delay marks the fourth postponement on a conditional-use permit for the debris fill proposed by Central Recycling Services. The company hopes to start dumping construction and demolition waste at a site near Loretta French Park in Chugiak. Nearby residents have expressed concern about risks to groundwater. Municipal planners recommend permit approval and company officials say they will keep area water contamination-free. Central also hopes to permit a fill site near Palmer.

The commission's lack of quorom for today's hearing prompted the delay, according to Michelle Ritter, with consultant DOWL HKM. The company is working with Eklutna Inc., the village corporation that owns the property where Central wants the Chugiak fill.
