Letter: Time to give up on toothpaste

At age 65 and with few teeth left, I have come to suspect that toothpaste and mouthwash are no more than mouth fresheners, and have little or no benefit to gums and teeth. If that supposition was true, there is no other conclusion to be had other than that those products are intentionally designed by manufacturers and recommended by dentists for the sole purpose of enrichment at the expense of their ethics and the health of those they purportedly serve, i.e., like most politics, fraud on a biblical scale.

It's my (almost) entirely anecdotal experience that common, inexpensive products, e.g. baking soda and especially hydrogen peroxide, are very effective against plaque, the principal cause of gum and tooth disease.
