Barrow and Bethel will face each other twice in Friday's semifinals at the annual Lime Solar-Pepsi Invitational boys and girls basketball tournament at Anchorage Christian.
Both schools picked up a pair of first-round victories Thursday. The Barrow boys beat Petersburg 57-43, and the Barrow girls edged Eielson 50-48. The Bethel boys topped Valdez 63-45, and the Bethel girls routed Point Hope 58-24.
Anchorage Christian also advanced both of its teams to the semifinals. The girls beat Petersburg 60-38 and the boys downed Kotzebue 88-24.
Action runs through Saturday, with eight games each day.
ACS 88, Kotzebue 24
Levi Auble and Immanuel Lopez scored 12 points apiece in the first quarter to propel ACS to a fast start in a 88-24 drubbing of Kotzebue.
Auble finished with a game-high 22 points for the Lions, who raced to a 31-8 lead in the first quarter.
Five players wound up in double figures for ACS. ImmanuelLopez finished with 14, Christiano Lopez added 15 and Randy Kohutel and Calvin Hoffman both had 12.
Seth Roetman's 11 points led Kotzebue.
Bethel 63, Valdez 45
Theodore Naneng and Taylor Hoffman combined to hit eight 3-pointers for the Bethel boys basketball team Thursday to propel the Warriors past Valdez 63-45 in the first round of the Lime Solar-Pepsi Invitational at Anchorage Christian.
Naneng drilled three treys and led all scorers with 24 points, and Hoffman nailed five 3-pointers on his way to 17 points.
Caj Rohrer led Valdez with 20 points, and Nathan Kuchin pitched in 12.
Barrow 57, Petersburg 43
Lawrence Kaleak pumped in 15 of his 17 points in the second half to pace Barrow in a 57-43 first-round win over Petersburg.
Glenn Suvlu and Makana Ahgeak each chipped in 11 points for Barrow.
Petersburg's Tristan Welton piled up a game-high 19 points.
Eielson 51, Point Hope 40
Chance Padgett and Dillon Scarboro helped Eielson to a big halftime lead in the Ravens' 51-40 win over Point Hope.
Padgett scored 11 points and Scarboro eight to power Eielson to a 30-17 halftime lead. Padgett finished with 16 and Scarboro 14.
Solomon Frankson's 18 points for Point Hope led all scorers.
ACS 60, Petersburg 38
Dallas Dickerson carried ACS past Petersburg 60-38 with a 22-point effort.
Brynn Tennison added 16 for the Lions, who led 38-20 at the half.
Kylie Wallace's 14 points and Ruby Brock's 12 paced Petersburg.
Bethel 58, Point Hope 24
Bethel's Riana Joseph outscored the opposition by herself, pumping in 27 points Thursday in a 58-24 win over the Point Hope girls basketball team in the first round of the Lime Solar-Pepsi Invitational at Anchorage Christian.
Joseph hit 13 field goals, scoring all but four of her points prior to the fourth quarter. Angela Thomas added eight points for Bethel.
Dorothy Koenig led Point Hope, hitting for all nine of her points in the fourth quarter.
Barrow 50, Eielson 48
Three of the four players who scored for the Barrow girls reached double digits and helped edge Eielson 50-48 in the opening round.
Ashley Lowery buried four 3-pointers to lead the way for Barrow with 17 points, followed by 14 points from Rose Mangoyak and 11 from Alaina Wolgemuth.
Katie Browder and Evonne Johnson each scored 14 points to lead Eielson.
Valdez 67, Kotzebue 51
Marian Wamsley scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to help Valdez charge past Kotzebue with a 67-51 first-round win.
Valdez' Mesa Rohrer and Rachel McDonald chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively, McDonald hitting the team's only 3-pointer.
Stephanie Sampson led Kotzebue with 18 points and Danielle Fields deposited 13.
