Anchorage police ID victim in fatal car-versus-bike crash

Anchorage police have publicly identified the bicyclist killed Thursday in a collision with a car as 65-year-old Eldridge Griffith.

Griffith was biking southbound, crossing the three lanes of Northern Lights Boulevard just west of Minnesota Drive, when a gray Subaru hit him in the middle lane, police said. Multiple callers reported the collision to police dispatchers about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, police said. Officers and medics found Griffith unconscious, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said.

"No citations or charges have been issued at this time," Castro wrote in a statement Tuesday.

It took longer than usual to release Griffith's name, as police had to first contact his out-of-state family, Castro said.
