Richardson Highway to Valdez remains closed

There's still no firm date on when the Richardson Highway will reopen but crews are making progress hauling away debris from a massive avalanche that has blocked the road north of Valdez for more than a week, said Alaska Department of Transportation spokeswoman Hannah Blankenship on Sunday.

"Weather is clear, cool and good for working conditions," she wrote. "Snow is still very solid and safe for removal."

Department officials have said they believe it will take days, not weeks, to remove the 100-foot high, 1,000-foot long snowfield from Mile 16 of the Richardson Highway.
