The deadline for nominating a young person for the “Summer of Heroes” award is July 15. Five young Alaskans, ages 6-18, will be chosen to receive $1,500 scholarships. Recipients will be selected on the basis of activities dedicated to making a difference in their community, such as volunteering, raising funds and inspiring others.

In past years recipients have been honored for organizing cleanups of public areas, starting a store in a rural village, creating a respite facility for returning soldiers and raising money to support an animal at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Recipients will be honored during a special ceremony at the Alaska State Fair in August. It’s the fourth year that the program has been in effect, sponsored by Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs -- Alaska.

Nominations can be made online.
