Police investigate pit bull's death as 'extreme animal cruelty'

The Anchorage Police Department is investigating the death of an East Anchorage pit bull that was found hanging from a tree with its throat slit.

"Snoop," the pit bull, lived in East Anchorage at the Penland Mobile Home Park across from the Northway Mall, according to APD. Police said his body was discovered Oct. 10 by a man walking in the woods near 20th Avenue and Rosemary Street, about a mile away from the dog's home.

Anchorage Animal Care and Control found Snoop had been microchipped and were able to contact the owners.

APD wrote in the release that the dog's owners believed he had run away about a week prior. APD also said Snoop's owner called the dog a "brother to (the owner's) daughter."

Anyone with information on the dog's death is being urged to call Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.

Snoop's death could warrant felony animal cruelty charges, APD wrote.
