Alaska's top football players nab postseason honors

The football awards continue to roll in for the cream of the Cook Inlet Conference crop.

The Alaska Football Coaches Association decided the Cook Inlet Conference's top offensive and defensive players were also the state's best, naming South's Justice Augafa Alaska's large-school Offensive Player of the Year and Bartlett's Archie Lemana the state's Defensive Player of the Year.

East's Tarini Tosi – a hulking 6-foot-3, 370-pound senior tackle who was the CIC's Lineman of the Year – also doubled up, getting named Alaska's best in the trenches.

Augafa, a senior running back who helped lead South to the large-school division state championship Friday, finished the season with 28 all-purpose touchdowns. Augafa, who ran for a pair of scores in the Wolverines' 20-6 win over West in the state final, was also a first-team pick as a kick returner and a defensive back.

Lemana, another senior, was a big part of Bartlett's 2014 turnaround. He anchored a defense that allowed the second-fewest points in the CIC during the regular season, helping the Golden Bears – who hadn't been to the playoffs since 2009 and were 0-8 two seasons ago – reach the state semifinals.

At the medium-school level, the state champion Soldotna Stars swept the awards for Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. Junior running back Drew Gibbs got the nod on the offensive side of the ball, while junior defensive end Trevor Walden was tabbed as the state's top defender. Kenai Central junior Zack Koziczkowski was named Lineman of the Year.

Eielson running back Anthony Griffith, who led the state in rushing with more than 2,000 yards this season while helping the Ravens to an undefeated season, was the small-school Offensive Player of the Year. Nikiski's Luke Johnson was named small-school Defensive Player of the Year.

Wasilla's Kent Rilatos was named the large-school Coach of the Year, and Soldotna's Galen Brantley was named the top coach at the medium-school level.

The 2014 season isn't quite finished. The Al Aska Shriners' 38th Annual North-South Classic senior all-star games will be played Saturday, Nov. 1 at The Dome. Girls' flag football all-stars will play at noon, followed by a small- medium-school game at 2 p.m. and a large schools game at 5 p.m.
