Tesla electric car is 'total loss' after Parks Highway crash

A Tesla Motors electric vehicle is "expected to be a total loss" after Alaska State Troopers said its driver lost control of the vehicle on the Parks Highway near Willow Monday evening.

Troopers said Jack West, the 57-year-old driver, was wearing his seatbelt and sustained non-life threatening injuries when he lost control of the blue 2011 Tesla on the "icy road surface" at 5:22 p.m.

According to AutoTrader, the original base manufacturer's suggested retail price for a 2011 Tesla Roadster was $109,000. The environmentally friendly car could travel a maximum of 200 miles per charge.

Coleen Greenshields, administrative officer with Alaska's Division of Motor Vehicles, said there are currently just 13 Tesla vehicles registered in the state.
