Former Veco head Bill Allen finishes federal probation for corruption charges

Former Alaska oil industry contractor Bill Allen is no longer on federal probation.

Allen was sentenced on Oct. 28, 2009, for attempting to influence the state's political process by buying off politicians.

Before his legal troubles, Allen was the head of oil field services company Veco. He watched his business empire implode amid a high-profile public corruption probe, and eventually pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

Allen was the government's star witness in the sweeping corruption case that ultimately saw some legislators and corporate officials sentenced to prison. He admitted to offering cash and other bribes to lawmakers who were examining rewriting Alaska's oil tax laws.

Allen served a prison sentence from January 2010 to November 2011. As part of his conviction, a federal judge imposed three years of supervised release, which expired Monday.
