Fairbanks municipalities plan marijuana meeting

FAIRBANKS -- Three municipalities within the Fairbanks North Star Borough will meet next week to discuss the new state law legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports a public forum hosted by the borough assembly and the Fairbanks and North Pole city councils is planned for Tuesday night.

Officials at the intergovernmental work session will give an overview of the voter-approved ballot measure. A public comment period on potential local regulations will follow.

Local governments can ban marijuana sales within their jurisdictions or pass zoning regulations restricting sales in designated areas.

Assembly Presiding Officer Karl Kassel said municipalities can't ban possession of marijuana or implement taxes so high it makes sales impossible.

He said assembly decisions likely will be influenced by the city councils' decisions.
