Dimond, Service pick up nonconference basketball wins

Dimond 56, Galena 27

In a coaching battle between uncle and nephew, the older generation prevailed Wednesday.

Dimond beat Galena 56-27 in a game that pitted Dimond coach Brad Lauwers against his nephew, Galena coach Lou Karlberg.

"They only dressed eight players and they got a little tired," Lauwers said of the Hawks. "But they were exceptionally well-coached."

Josh Fosi's 14 points led the Lynx, who got 10 points from Mason Merchant and eight from Carlos Diaz. Diaz sank six of seven free throws to help Dimond to a 16-of-21 effort from the line.

Jacob Miller led all scorers with 15 points for Galena, which is getting a whirlwind introduction to the Lauwers/Karlberg klan this week. The Hawks are playing in the three-day Grace Christian Classic beginning Thursday, and on Saturday they play the host Grizzlies. In that game, Karlberg will coach against his little brother, Tobin Karlberg, a freshman at Grace Christian.
