Barrow freshmen shine in T-bird Classic win over Juneau

Led by a pair of freshmen who make the future look bright in Barrow, the Whalers won their second straight game at the T-bird Classic at East High on Friday.

Kamaka Hepa continued to impress and Travis Adams was poised and polished in a 78-70 win over Juneau.

Hepa, a versatile 6-foot-7, and Adams, a 5-9 point guard, played all 32 minutes for the Whalers. Hepa racked up 32 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Adams furnished eight assists and five steals.

If the two look like they've done this before, it's because they have.

"We've been playing together since elementary school," said Hepa, who scored 24 points and nine rebounds in 20 minute of play in a Thursday victory over Kodiak.

Hepa, who is already gaining notice from college basketball analysts, hit 10 of 14 field goals -- including all four of his shots from 3-point range -- and 8 of 11 free throws.

His self-evaluation? "I could've shot the ball better."

The game was close throughout and was tied 54-54 going into the fourth quarter.

Sione Tuai added 20 points and six rebounds for Barrow. John Yadao topped Juneau with 17 and Kaleb Tompkins and Adam Empson added 12 apiece.

The round-robin tournament concludes Saturday with four games, including a 6 p.m. marquee matchup between Barrow and East. Hepa said he's looking forward to the game.

"They looked pretty good last night," he said. "It should be a good game."

East played well again Friday in a 75-43 thumping of Kodiak. Marquis White delivered his second double-double in as many games with 13 points and 11 rebounds while also handing out six assists.

East, which led 40-23 at the half, was on fire from 3-point range. The T-birds buried 15 of 37 treys, an effort led by Alex Canete Hall (5 of 10 from long range) and Louis Bonner (4 of 9). Hall finished with 21 points and Bonner had 20 points to go with five steals.

The T-birds shot 41.7 percent for the game and racked up 19 steals.

Kodiak, which was held back by 30 turnovers, got a game-high 24 points from Jemuel Mangalus.

In girls action at East, Kodiak survived a long delay in its game with Eagle River to win 51-14 and East pummeled Service 76-23.

The Kodiak-Eagle River game was delayed by more than an hour by an afternoon bomb threat at East High. The gym was evacuated but tournament action resumed after police deemed the building safe.

Dannika Catt's 14 points and Kahye Yu's 11 rebounds propelled Kodiak, which limited Eagle River to two points in the first half. The Bears recorded 22 steals, with seven coming from Kristhel Fangonilo.

Lauryn Green scored eight points to lead Eagle River.

In East's win over Service, Kalolaine Uhila ripped down 15 rebounds and blocked four shots and Octavia Hines poured in 19 points and swiped the ball five times.

Four other T-birds had four steals apiece for East, which forced many of Service's 45 turnovers and held the Cougars to seven points in the second half.

Katie Pearce had a team-high six points and Hailey Chavez gathered eight rebounds for Service.
