Prep hockey: South knocks off Service, Chugiak wins in OT

South 2, Service

Two days before the start of the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament, South made things interesting by knocking off regular-season champion Service 2-1 Saturday at Ben Boeke Arena.

John Matson and Daniel Ramsey delivered second-period goals for the Wolverines. Service didn't score until the final minute, when Jack Martensen struck with 41 seconds left.

Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 shots for South and Ronan Klancher stopped 31 for Service.

The outcome won't affect seedings for the CIC tournament that begins Monday. Service is the No. 1 seed and South is the No. 3 seed and the conference's hottest team -- earlier in the week, South beat second-seeded Dimond.

Chugiak 7, Eagle River 6 (OT)

Andrew Beckett's goal with 25 seconds left in overtime lifted the Chugiak hockey team past Eagle River 7-6 in a wild regular-season finale at the McDonald Center.

Eagle River led 6-3 with less than five minutes remaining when the Mustangs staged an epic rally.

Chugiak's Kadin Yockey and Zachary Krajnik scored goals in a 31-second span to make it 6-5 with 4:16 remaining, and Daniel Casey provided the game-tying goal with 68 seconds left.

Krajnik, Sam Hanson and John Hammer also scored for Chugiak, which fired 31 shots at Eagle River goaltender Trent Burnham.

Schuyler Davis and Kyle Johnson each scored twice for Eagle River, which trailed 2-1 after one period but forged a 3-3 tie after two periods. Jesse Johnson and Josh Linn also scored for the Wolves.

Goalie Jack Straub stopped 23 shots for Chugiak.
