UAA men torch nets in win over Simon Fraser

The nets got a workout Saturday night at Simon Fraser University, where a hot-shooting UAA men's basketball team hit 60 percent of its shots in a 115-98 victory over the Clan.

Travis Thompson pumped in 30 points, Brian McGill poured in 29 points and distributed nine assists and Derrick Fain supplied a double-double to fuel the offensive outburst in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Thompson, a senior guard from Dimond High, enjoyed his best night of the season. He buried seven of 10 shots from 3-point range, was 8 of 11 from the field and 7 of 10 from the foul line. He also handed out six assists in a game that had the Seawolves register 28 assists on 35 baskets.

The win improved UAA to 12-9 overall and 8-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The win was the third straight for the Seawolves, who won both of their road games this week to vault from fourth place in the GNAC standings to second place. UAA shares second place with Seattle Pacific, which is 8-3 after Saturday's double-overtime loss to league-leading Western Oregon (10-1). Close behind are Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington, who share fourth place with 7-3 records.

Simon Fraser (7-11, 3-8) scored the game's first bucket. McGill answered with a 3-pointer and the Seawolves never trailed again.

McGill, a junior guard, had 25 points by halftime to boost UAA to a 62-43 lead.

The break didn't cool off the Seawolves, who opened the second half by scoring the first 10 points and 13 of the first 15 points to push their lead to 30 points.

They hit the 100-point mark with six minutes left when Kevin Bowman drilled a 3-pointer.

UAA hit 20 of 32 treys (62.5 percent) and 35 of 58 overall (60.3 percent). Joining Thompson and McGill (10 of 13 from the field, 7 of 8 from the foul line) in double figures were Fain, who racked up 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Dom Hunter, who added 12 points.

Sango Niang led Simon Fraser with 24 points. The Clan shot 49.3 percent.

The streaking Seawolves return home for a single game this week -- a Saturday night game against in-state rival UAF.
