Aniak snowmachiner flown to Anchorage with serious injuries after crash

A 15-year-old Aniak boy was flown to an Anchorage hospital with serious injuries after he crashed his speeding snowmachine Monday into an SUV, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The boy, who has not been identified, drove the snowmachine "at a high rate of speed" into the intersection of Ikmiq Court and Airport Boulevard without yielding, according to a troopers dispatch posted online Wednesday.

An adult man was also on the snowmachine, but troopers say once it collided with a Ford Explorer, he fled and did not provide aid "even though he was the juvenile's guardian," the dispatch said.

Troopers received a report of the crash around noon Monday. The driver of the SUV, 35-year-old Marda Hoeldt, was taken to a health clinic in Aniak with minor injuries.

The snowmachine was totaled and the boy suffered serious injuries. He was also taken to the clinic before being flown by medevac about 320 air miles east to a hospital in Anchorage.

The Bethel District Attorney's Office will decide whether to charge the boy with reckless driving, according to the dispatch.
