Speedskaters brave cold, wind for long distance races

Just call Michael Schuler the ice man.

Schuler was the lone skater to complete the 50-kilometer race on Saturday during Alaska Speedskating Club long track speedskating races at Cuddy Midtown Park. He did so in two hours, 17 minutes and 7.2 seconds despite temperatures in the single digits and a persistent north wind, according to race organizers.

In the 25-kilometer race, Chuck Hansell was the top finisher in a field of five. He completed the race in 1:16:30.8, besting Kevin Pederson by 16.6 seconds. Brent Veltkemp was third, followed by Shelly Schweum and Joan Antonson.

The next long track races will be held on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Visit alaskaspeedskating.com for more information.
