A 43-year-old Anchorage man has been charged with manslaughter in the July death of a Wasilla woman who died in a single-vehicle rollover collision near Girdwood, Alaska State Troopers say.
John William Martin was indicted on the manslaughter charge Wednesday, according to online court records. Martin's bail was set at a $100,000 cash appearance bond plus a $10,000 performance bond, but according to online court records, he was not in custody as of Wednesday.
Martin was traveling with Margie Thompson, 34, northbound on the Seward Highway when the Chevrolet van the two were riding in crossed into the southbound lane and struck a guardrail, rolling the van. Thompson was ejected and the van landed on top of her, troopers said.
Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday that Martin was also charged with driving under the influence.
Martin was a homeless advocate who, for years, could be seen sitting outside of City Hall most days. In 2011, Martin began sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building in protest after the Municipality of Anchorage began cracking down on unsanctioned homeless campsites.
