UAA hires Carvalho as volleyball assistant coach

UAA has hired Sheldon Carvalho, who has coached junior college teams to the national tournament, as the volleyball team's new assistant coach under head coach Chris Green.

Carvalho has coached the American Leadership Academy and directed the Utah high school to the state tournament each of the last two seasons. Before that, he coached West Texas College to three straight 20-win seasons and two national-tournament appearances.

Carvalho began coaching at Brigham Young-Hawaii in his native Hawaii.

He replaced Nicky Rose of Anchorage, who left UAA after 15 seasons.

The Seawolves last season went 21-6 and reached the NCAA Division II tournament for the fifth time in Green's seven seasons.
