Man accused of lighting another man on fire pleads guilty

A man accused of setting another man on fire pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in an Anchorage courtroom Friday morning.

Trevor Perry, 21, was charged, along with his girlfriend Elshandrea Yvon Charleen Durfee, in May of 2013 for the incident that left Joseph Sledge with severe burns on his lower extremities.

On Feb. 10, 2013, a neighbor found Sledge on fire on the floor of the couple's apartment and dumped a fish bowl on him to extinguish the flames, police said when the couple was charged.

Sledge was hospitalized for several weeks.

According to the charging documents, Perry originally told an officer that Sledge showed up high and drunk earlier that day smelling like lighter fluid. He told investigators he left and returned to find police investigating the burning.

Perry's grandmother showed police a text message that said Perry was planning to set Sledge on fire, charges stated.

Online court records show that Durfee has not reached a plea and is expected to go to court in March. She faces an assault charge.
