UAA women top region basketball poll

The UAA Seawolves continue to be held in high esteem by observers of women's college basketball.

Fresh off a No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II national poll, the Seawolves earned another honor Wednesday when they were named the top team in the first NCAA Western Region poll of the season.

The regional rankings are important because they're used to award berths and seed teams at the national tournament. The top five teams in the final region rankings (which will be released March 4) advance to the tournament, as do the winners of the GNAC, CCAA and Pac West conference tournaments.

UAA is currently 21-1 against Division II opponents and 16-1 against West Region foes. Other Great Northwest Athletic Teams included in the top 10 are No. 5 Seattle Pacific and No. 10 Western Washington.

UAA (23-1 overall, 13-1 GNAC) will play at Simon Fraser (13-10, 9-6) in Burnaby, British Columbia on Thursday and at Western Washington (17-7, 11-4) in Bellingham on Saturday. Both games are at 6 p.m. Alaska time.

On Tuesday, the Seawolves rose to the No. 1 spot in the USA Today Division II national coaches poll for only the second time in program history.
