Troopers: Man dies days after suicide attempt at Anchorage jail

Alaska State Troopers reported Thursday that a man had died several days after a suicide attempt at the Anchorage Correctional Complex.

Troopers said they were told of the suicide attempt shortly after 4 a.m. on Feb. 11, when 38-year-old Elijah Walker was "found in the shower hanging."

"CPR was administered and vital signs were regained," troopers wrote, before Walker was taken to Alaska Regional Hospital and placed in the critical care unit there.

Walker died as a result of his injuries on Feb. 15, with his family present, troopers wrote. Troopers weren't told of his death until Thursday.

"Walker had been released from official detention on (Feb. 12) from the Anchorage Correctional Center while he was at the hospital," troopers wrote. Walker's remains were sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

The death is the third at the facility in as many months. In January, 33-year-old Larry Kobuk died after being restrained by guards when he became combative while being booked into the facility, troopers said. In December, 28-year-old Robert Alexie was found dead in a bathroom just hours after being arrested. That death was ruled a suicide.
