Barrow girls, boys clinch state-tournament berths

The Barrow girls are headed to the Class 3A state basketball tournament, thanks to a 69-39 blowout win over Bethel in Friday's championship game of the Western Conference tournament at Dimond High.

The boys are going too, although they had to survive a scare from Bethel before securing a 41-37 win in the boys title game.

In the girls game, the Whalers flattened Bethel with an attack led by Rose Mongoyak's 17 points.

Bethel, which got 15 points from Courtney Williams in the loss, will face Kotzebue in Saturday's second-place game at 6 p.m. The winner will join Barrow at the March 19-21 state tournament in Anchorage.

Kotzebue advanced to the second-place game by edging Nome 51-48 in a Friday loser-out game. Paeton Schaeffer's 22 points powered the Huskies.

In the boys title game, Kamaka Hepa netted a game-high 17 points for Barrow. Peyton Corbertt led Bethel with 10.

Bethel will take on the Nome boys at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with a berth in the state tournament at stake. In Friday's consolation round, Alex Gray scored 14 points to help Nome stay alive with a 46-41 win over Kotzebue.
