Thomas 2nd, Anders 7th for UAA at indoor track championships

UAA's Cody Thomas racked up a career-best heptathlon score Saturday to claim second place in that event at the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championships in Birmingham, Alabama.

Thompson, a junior from New Zealand, piled up 5,488 points, beating his previous best in the seven-event competition by 150 points. He trailed champion Justin Balczak of Azusa Pacific by 118 points.

Thompson was one of two Seawolves who earned All-America honors on Saturday. Karolin Anders, a junior from Germany, placed seventh in the women's pentathlon with a school-record 3,822 points.

It's the fifth straight national meet where Anders has earned All-America honor in multi-sport competition. She has notched three straight top-10 pentathlon finishes at the indoor championships – placing fourth last season and fifth in 2003 – and two straight top-10 heptathlon finishes in the outdoor championships.

After setting school records on Friday in the high jump and 60 meters to take the firts-day lead, Thomas added a school record in the pole vault on Saturday with a jump of 13 feet, 5.25 inches. In his other events Saturday, Thomas finished the 60-meter hurdles in 8.46 seconds and the 1,000 meters in 2:47.54.

Balczak vaulted from fourth place to first place on Saturday.
