Walker submits nominees to North Pacific fishery council

Gov. Bill Walker nominated Daniel Hull, a commercial fisherman from Cordova, to serve a second term on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and named Andrew Mezirow, a sport fishing charter operator from Seward, to a second seat on the council.

The nominations, made Friday to the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, must be approved by the federal government.

Hull was named to a seat reserved for a small-boat commercial fisherman from Alaska. As alternative nominees, Walker selected Buck Laukitis, a Homer fisherman, and Paul Gronholdt, a commercial fisherman from Sand Point.

Mezirow was named to a seat for recreational fishermen. The two alternatives named by Walker were Richard Yamada, a fishing lodge owner from Juneau, and Art Nelson, the son-in-law of U.S. Rep. Don Young and the director of the Bering Sea Fishermen's Association.
