UAA distance dynamo Notz bags GNAC honor

UAA junior distance runner Dominik Notz was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in outdoor men's track and field after shattering his personal-best in the 5,000 meters and reaching a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II championships.

Notz, a junior from Germany, clocked 14 minutes, 15.61 seconds, at the Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic in California to slash more than 27 seconds off his previous best for 3.1 miles outdoors.

Notz easily finished inside the provisional qualifying time for nationals (14:37.45). The standard for automatically qualifying is 13:57.77.

UAA junior Amy Johnston, honorable mention for the GNAC weekly women's honor, at the Occidental meet bagged a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:13.92, which put her more than seven seconds inside the necessary standard.
