Woman stabbed while walking on popular Anchorage bike trail

Anchorage police said Sunday that a woman had been knocked unconscious and stabbed near Goose Lake while walking along the Lanie Fleischer Chester Creek Trail, a popular bike path that runs 4 miles through the city.

According to police, the woman had just crossed a pedestrian bridge that runs over Northern Lights Boulevard and was walking toward Goose Lake, "when an unknown person approached her from behind and knocked her unconscious." The victim told police she had been texting and walking along the trail.

The woman told police that when she came to, someone was going through her pockets.

"She also realized that she had been stabbed in the lower back," police said. "Her attacker then fled on foot, taking nothing."

Medics took the victim to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No suspect information was immediately available; police received the report of the stabbing at about 12:20 p.m.

The Chester Creek Trail runs from Westchester Lagoon to Goose Lake, and is connected to numerous other city trail systems.
