Troopers: North Pole man escapes Fairbanks halfway house

Shortly after midnight Friday morning, Alaska State Troopers say, they received notice that a 30-year-old North Pole man had escaped from a Fairbanks halfway house.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that Jonathon Stanton "walked away" from the Northstar Center, where was being "incarcerated." Prisoners are free to come and go from halfway houses such as Northstar Center for work or other obligations, such as community service, that will help them re-integrate into society -- though they are expected to return voluntarily.

After a high-profile escape from Northstar last fall, Department of Corrections Deputy Director of Administration Sherrie Daigle said the decision to stay represents part of the transition, and inmates who don't, suggest "they are not ready to make that decision to be a law abiding citizen."

The online dispatch does not specify the crime for which Stanton was serving time.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is being asked to contact Alaska State Troopers at 451-5100.
