High wind watch for upper Anchorage Hillside, Turnagain Arm Monday

Anchorage's upper Hillside and Turnagain Arm are on high wind watch starting Monday evening, with gusts up to 80 miles per hour possible, according to an Anchorage Office of Emergency Management advisory released Sunday.

The wind is expected to build Monday, peaking in evening through nighttime hours, according to the advisory. Winds will then taper off Tuesday.

Along Turnagain Arm and higher elevations, winds of 45-60 mph with gusts to 80 mph could cause downed trees and debris that could make travel difficult, the advisory said.

Lower elevations in Anchorage may see gusts of up to 30-35 mph, but "certainly nothing damaging," said Shaun Baines, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage.

"This is one of the few potential high wind events for this winter," Baines said.
