Forecasters predict fire weather for Matanuska Valley Tuesday

Warning of low humidity and high winds, the National Weather Service Monday issued a fire weather watch for the Matanuska Valley.

The watch takes effect Tuesday morning and lasts until Tuesday night.

The watch includes a forecast for winds of sustained speeds from 15 to 30 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph. It also calls for relative humidity levels to drop as low as 27 percent, while temperatures climb to the mid 40s or lower 50s, conditions that combine to create "critical fire weather conditions."

Fire danger increases any time winds reach speeds of 25 miles per hour and relative humidity is lower than 30 percent, NWS forecaster Dan Samelson said.
