Service's Van Allen named girls Gatorade soccer player of year

Service senior Haleigh Van Allen, a prolific scorer, has been named the Gatorade Alaska girls soccer player of the year.

Van Allen has delivered 18 goals and seven assists in the Cougars' first 11 matches (8-1-2). She was an All-Cook Inlet Conference selection in each of her first three high school seasons and been named all-tournament at the state championships each of the past two seasons.

"She's got a great first touch, she can hit the ball from distance and she's very creative,'' Dimond girls coach Cari Gil said in a Gatorade news release. "She can score goals that you just think are impossible.''

Van Allen has signed to played college soccer at Northern Arizona University beginning in the fall. She owns a 3.38 grade-point average, is active in her church and has volunteered on community clean-up initiatives and also to collect and donate soccer equipment to kids in Africa.
