Memorial Day services and events

Fort Richardson National Cemetery

The 2015 annual Memorial Day service sponsored by the cemetery staff will begin at noon on the cemetery grounds. Preliminary music will begin at 11:30 a.m. The guest speaker is Brig. Gen. Laurie Hummel, adjutant general for Alaska National Guard. The master of ceremonies is Bob Nelson, counselor at the Anchorage Veterans Resource Center. Music will be provided by the Midnight Sons Chorus and The Glacier Brass. There will also be a color guard and a rifle salute. Bugles Across America volunteers will perform Echo Taps to close the ceremony. Members of The Military Youth Academy will be on hand to assist with parking. Motorcycle drivers must wear a helmet and fluorescent or reflective vest to gain access. Handicapped drivers will be allowed to park in the cemetery. If you are transporting handicapped passengers, drop them off and park along Davis Highway. All others will be parking along Davis Highway and shuttle service will be provided. Except for certified working animals, pets are not allowed in the cemetery. Seating is limited, so bring a blanket or lawn chair, but leave the picnic baskets at home, as eating on the cemetery grounds is prohibited. (384-7075,www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ftrichardson.asp)

Delaney Park Strip

Mayor Dan Sullivan and the Anchorage Military & Veterans Affairs Commission have invited all veterans, military service members and their friends and families to join together in honoring America's fallen service members. The service is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on Delaney Park Strip, between Ninth and 10th avenues and I and L streets. Highlights include patriotic music, spiritual words, speakers and the laying of wreaths to honor the fallen.

Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery

American Legion Jack Henry Post 1, Riders and Auxiliary, Sons of American Legion and Aurora Borealis Post 21 host a ceremony at the municipal cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave., starting at noon at the flagpole. There will be a posting of the flag and speeches. The event is followed by a pig roast at Jack Henry Post 1, 840 W. Fireweed Lane, with food, games and children's activities. 1-5 p.m. Cost is $6 for members and $8 for guests.

Memorial Day Car Show

The Anchorage Corvette Association car show at the Northway Mall parking lot features cars, trucks and military vehicles from noon to 4 p.m. at 3101 Penland Parkway. Organizers will mark the holiday with a moment of silence at 3 p.m., a flag presentation by the Chugiak High School Junior ROTC and the playing of Taps. The Corvette Association will accept nonperishable foods for the Armed Services YMCA food bank for local military. There will also be people on hand to accept donations for the Last Frontier Honor Flight, a program that flies older veterans to Washington, D.C., to view the monuments. Wasilla

American Legion Post 35 will host a 10:30 a.m. procession with Wasilla Police escort. It starts at the Wasilla Post Office and ends at the cemetery on Wasilla-Fishhook Road. A service will follow. The annual ceremony at the Veterans' Wall of Honor, 7744 Visitors View Court, Palmer, begins at 1 p.m. (376-3500)
