Gastineau Apartments owners ordered to tear down property

JUNEAU -- A demolition order has been issued for the crumbling Gastineau Apartments that have sat vacant in Juneau since a 2012 fire.

The Juneau Empire reports the city has served the apartment's owners, Kathleen and James Barrett, with an order to tear down the building by the end of November. City attorney Amy Mead updated the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly on the years-long saga Monday.

Demolition is likely to cost between $900,000 and $1.2 million.

Kathleen Barrett wrote a letter notifying the city the property is currently involved in a bid for demolition.

The Assembly previously considered acquiring the property, which burned in a fire three years ago and again in March, but decided against it.

This is the first demolition the city has issued since 2010.
