Ostrander bags 2nd straight Gatorade track honor

Allie Ostrander of Kenai Central High, who last month broke two of her state records and came within a second of another record at the state meet, has been named the Gatorade Alaska girls track and field Athlete of the Year for the second straight time.

Ostrander, who is headed to Boise State on scholarship in the fall, at the state meet swept the 800 meters, 1,600 and 3,200.

Ostrander clocked 4 minutes, 48.32 seconds in the 1,600 to shave a second off her previous state standard. Her 10:09.73 in the 3,200 trimmed four seconds off her previous state benchmark. And her 2:11:30 in the 800 was within one second of the record owned by Wasilla's Morgan Dampier (2:10.42, 2011).

Ostrander's personal-best 3,200 of 9:58.74, run at the Region III meet a week before the state meet, ranks as the second-fastest prep time in the country this year.

Ostrander also is the six-time junior champion at Mount Marathon. Last year in the race halfway up and down the 3,022-foot mountain overlooking Seward, Ostrander became the first girl in race history to finish first overall in the junior race. Her time of 28:54 broke her girls race record by 98 seconds.
