Sitka search, rescue crews help 2 sets of lost hikers

SITKA -- The Sitka Fire Department search and rescue team had a busy day when they rescued not one set of hikers but two.

The Sitka Daily Sentinel reports that the team helped guide a group of disoriented hikers down Bear Mountain Sunday afternoon, only to have to run off to help a man on the Mount Verstovia trail.

Search and rescue captain Lance Ewers says the Bear Mountain hikers have been fogged in and became disoriented. The fire department dispatched two teams, one to locate the hiking party with a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter, and the other to go up the trail.

Later a team was deployed up Mt. Verstovia to assist a dehydrated hiker in his 40s. The man was able to walk on his own after receiving water from the rescuers.
