Friday in the Alaska Baseball League: Miners nip Chinooks, Pilots trip Bucs

A meeting between the Alaska Baseball League's best teams ended Friday with the Mat-Su Miners taking a 1-0 win over the Chugiak Chinooks in Palmer.

The Miners (10-3 ABL, 12-3 overall) put together three consecutive singles in the fourth inning to score the only run at Hermon Brothers Field. Tyler Wolfe, Zack Plunkett and Jake Schleppenbach all delivered hits with one out, with Schleppenbach's single driving in Wolfe.

Mat-Su's Eli Morgan struck out seven and surrendered three hits in seven innings to silence the Chinooks (8-5, 9-7).

In Anchorage, the Glacier Pilots outdueled the Bucs 5-2 at Mulcahy Stadium in a game between the ABL's Anchorage rivals.

Joe Wainhouse was a force at the plate for the Pilots (6-8, 6-9). He was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and put the Pilots in the lead for good with a two-out, two-run single that broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning.

Taylor Wells and Brodie Leftridge drove in runs for the Bucs (4-8, 5-9).

Friday's only other game was a nonleague affair in Kenai, where the Peninsula Oilers stopped the Seattle Studs 6-2. Cameron Stanton struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings and Jordan Washam and Alex Siefert each supplied three hits for the Oilers (4-4, 6-7).

The Bucs and Pilots meet again at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium, and the Miners and Chinooks play again at 4 p.m., this time at Loretta French Field in Chugiak. The Oilers head to Fairbanks for a 7 p.m. game against the Goldpanners.
