Mumma, Varys set pace in Palmer 5-K

A pair of youngsters and a 36-year-old woman set the pace Saturday in the Race for Technology in Palmer.

Leif Mumma and Gavin Block, both running in the 14-and-under age group, and women's winner Leslie Varys were the only racers to break the 20-minute mark in the 5-kilometer race.

Mumma led the way in 19 minutes, 15.01 seconds. Block was second in 19:27.61, less than three seconds ahead of Varys (19:29.96), a Wasilla runner who has notched several women's victories in the annual race.

In the kids' one-mile run, wins went to Samuel Stapley (7:19.3) and Emily Reich (9:59.3).

The race, sponsored by MTA, raises money for community libraries in the Valley.
