Clarke 8th, DeLoach 7th in Diamond League track and field meet

Alaskans who earned medals at the recent U.S. national track and field championships finished near the back of the pack Thursday at a Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Jordan Clarke of Anchorage placed eighth in the men's shot put and Janay DeLoach of Fairbanks placed seventh in the women's long jump.

Both athletes took home bronze medals at the national championships last month in Eugene, Oregon, and both will represent the United States at next month's world championships in China.

Clarke's best throw Thursday was 67 feet, 7 inches, well off his bronze-medal-winning mark of 70-6.25 at the national championships. Thursday's win went to Germany's David Storl, whose throw of 72-10 is the second best in the world this season.

DeLoach jumped 21 feet, 7.25 inches, more than a foot shorter than her leap of 22-9.75 at the national championships. Taking the gold medal Thursday was U.S. champion Tianna Bartoletta with a jump of 22-6.25.
