Missing construction worker found alive in Eagle River

A 38-year-old construction worker who went missing from his Eagle River worksite over the weekend was found Wednesday morning in a nearby neighborhood, the Anchorage Police Department said.

According to a statement from police, residents in the Birch Hills Drive neighborhood reported seeing "a disheveled male with twigs and leaves in his hair knocking on doors and walking through the yards of residents."

Responding officers were able to identify the man as Vasily Basargin, who was reported missing Saturday when he walked away from a construction site. Since his disappearance, police said, they received several reports from local residents who thought they'd seen Basargin attempting to enter homes and sheds.

On Monday, with the assistance of K-9 officers, police discovered a sleeping bag in the woods off Broadwater Drive they believed Basargin had used.

"Witnesses also told police they thought they saw a man loitering high in the trees who was also believed to be Basargin," police said.

When police found Basargin, he told them he hadn't eaten in five days. Emergency responders took him to a hospital for treatment of dehydration and further evaluation.
