Miners, Pilots use big bats to post Alaska Baseball League wins

The Mat-Su Miners and Anchorage Glacier Pilots wielded big bats in Alaska Baseball League wins Tuesday night.

The Miners pounded out 14 hits in an 11-4 win over the Peninsula Oilers at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer, and the Pilots racked up 10 hits in a 4-0 victory over Chugiak at Mulcahy Stadium.

Mat-Su got a huge boost from the bottom of its lineup. Hunter Simmons, Zack Plunkett and Jake Schleppenbach, the team's Nos.7, 8 and 9 batters, were a combined 7 for 12 with seven RBIs.

Plunkett delivered a two-run double in the Miners' six-run third inning, and Schleppenbach drove in two runs in their four-run fourth.

In the Pilots' win over Chugiak, Anchorage turned four hits into three runs in the third inning. Jack Anderson doubled in one run and Joe Wainhouse singled in another that inning.

Drew Jacobs pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing three hits, to help shut out the Chinooks.

On Thursday, the Pilots host the Oilers and Chugiak hosts the Fairbanks Goldpanners in a pair of 7 p.m. games.
