Search called off for Oregon boater missing near Cordova

Alaska State Troopers say the search has ended for a 30-year-old Oregon man still missing Sunday after he and his stepson were involved in a boating accident in rough weather near Cordova.

Adam Lord and his 10-year-old stepson left Cordova Harbor Friday evening in a Zodiac inflatable boat with a motor, troopers said. Another boat with them turned back due to weather and rough seas but Lord and his stepson continued toward Hawkins Island about 2 miles from Cordova.

The group in the other boat called troopers about the overdue boaters around 4 a.m. Saturday, troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said.

Searchers found the boy safe inside a seasonal cabin on the island, troopers said in an online dispatch. Their boat was found upside down about 50 yards away. The boy, who was wearing a life jacket, was able to swim to shore, troopers said. Lord was not wearing a life jacket.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search Saturday night for Adam Lord, Ipsen said. Alaska Wildlife Troopers, the U.S. Forest Service and Coast Guard assisted in the search.
