Hikers reported stuck on mud flats return safely to land

A group of people reportedly stuck on the mud flats near Fire Island marked the first of several incidents that kept Anchorage fire crews hopping Sunday and into early Monday.

Firefighters also responded to an injured Flattop Mountain hiker and a suspicious trailer fire in Muldoon, according to a Monday news release from AFD spokesperson John See.

The mud flats call came Sunday afternoon: Hikers reported seeing three people stuck near Fire Island, See said. Fire department units spread out between the Port of Anchorage, Point Woronzof and Kincaid Park in an effort to locate the trio. The U.S. Coast Guard also responded, and air-traffic controllers at Merrill Field asked for help from pilots. The three individuals, who were not identified, made it safely back to shore at about 5:30 p.m.

A few hours later, AFD's front-country rescue team was part of a response to transport a hiker with a lower-leg injury off Flattop shortly after 9 p.m., See said. Responders used an all-terrain vehicle after the patient made it halfway down the mountain with help from other hikers.

At 3:30 a.m. Monday, dispatchers received a report of a suspicious fire in Glencaren Court on Muldoon Road, he said. One caller reported someone intentionally set the fire beneath a trailer. Everyone inside got out and crews got the fire under control in 30 minutes. AFD is investigating.
