Grand jury indicts Selawik man on murder, assault charges

A Kotzebue grand jury has indicted a Selawik resident suspected of killing another man in the village.

Alaska State Troopers say 39-year-old Christopher Cleveland was indicted last week on counts of first- and second-degree murder, attempted murder, burglary and assault.

He is suspected of shooting 23-year-old Wade Cleveland. Investigators say he also fired at a village police officer and others during a standoff.

Selawik is a village of nearly 900 people about 90 miles east of Kotzebue.

Troopers at 4:42 a.m. July 6 took a call of a man in Selawik firing a gun. A village police officer reported the shooter had barricaded himself in a home and that a man outside the home had been shot and killed.

Christopher Cleveland surrendered nearly 10 hours later.
