UAA hockey roster undergoes some shuffling

The UAA hockey roster shuffled as players reported to campus this week ahead of classes beginning Monday.

Goaltender Michael Matyas, and forwards Hayden Trupp of Anchorage and Hudson Friesen, did not return.

The Seawolves have also added a third goaltender in freshman Evan Hauser.

Coach Matt Thomas said Matyas, who would have been a red-shirt junior, is just shy of his degree in finance and decided to concentrate on finishing his degree. Thomas said Friesen, who would have been a junior, has transferred to the University of Manitoba and Trupp, who would have been a senior, is going to try out with the professional Alaska Aces.

Matyas last season went 1-3-1 with a 3.59 goals-against average and .863 save percentage. Friesen scored one goal, four assists and five points in 32 games, and Trupp went 1-3—4 in 21 games.

Hauser joins the Seawolves after playing most of last season with the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League. With Kenai, he went 2-15-1 with a 3.84 goals-against average and .888 save percentage. Earlier last season, Hauser played for the Great Falls (Montana) Americans of the NA3HL, a Tier III circuit, going 14-0-0 with a 1.42 goals-against average, .957 save percentage and three shutouts.

Hauser, a depth recruit, is a late addition to the Seawolves because another goalie recruit proved ineligible.

The Seawolves return sophomore goalie Olivier Mantha, who made 29 of 34 starts last season, going 7-18-3 with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage that ranked as the third-highest all-time in program history. He was voted UAA's Most Valuable Player by his teammates.

Also back is sophomore goalie Jared D'Amico, who made two appearances, one a start, and went 0-1-0 with a 1.98 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.

UAA plays an Oct. 2 exhibition game against Mount Royal, a Canadian university, in Soldotna. The annual Green and Gold scrimmage is Oct. 4 at UAA's Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves open the season on Oct. 9, when they entertain Arizona State at Sullivan Arena in the Sun Devils' first game as an NCAA team. Arizona State previously was a club team.
