Anchorage police: Teen turns himself in after accidental Spenard shooting

A 17-year-old boy turned himself in to Anchorage police Wednesday for a shooting in the neighborhood of Spenard, the first of three shootings last weekend.

"It appears that the shooting was accidental and that the suspect and victim knew one another," police said Friday, adding the use of alcohol and marijuana were involved in the incident.

The teenager showed up at the Anchorage Police Department just before 3 p.m. with his father, police said. He was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree misconduct involving a weapon and then released into his father's custody.

Police didn't identify the boy because he's being charged as a minor, said APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

The shooting happened last Saturday evening. Police reported 18-year-old Roderick Salas was found at a home on the 2500 block of Kona Lane in Spenard suffering from a gunshot wound to his pelvis. Salas was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition as of Sunday.

Oistad said she didn't have an update on Salas' condition but said that he survived the injuries. If Salas had died, the shooter could have faced manslaughter charges, she said.
