Man charged with arson, murder in 2011 Anchorage apartment fire

A 44-year-old Anchorage man was arrested Friday on multiple felony charges stemming from a December 2011 apartment fire that killed his wife.

Marco Antonio Flores Sr. has been charged with murder, arson and assault. According to a press release from the Alaska Department of Law, Flores intentionally set fire to the apartment he shared with his family.

Flores' wife, Angelica Flores, died as a result of the fire, prosecutors say. His adult son and 2-year-old daughter escaped harm by jumping out of a second-story window, they said. Anchorage police previously reported that Flores also escaped out the window.

Flores is originally from Chicago, prosecutors said.

The Anchorage police and fire departments investigated the fire. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Chicago Police Department assisted. Assistant district attorney Jack McKenna said ATF provided lab work and examined the electrical system of the apartment.

Flores faces a first-degree murder charge, which carries a sentence of 20 to 99 years in prison, prosecutors said.

The investigation that led to Flores' charges is ongoing, according to the Department of Law.

According to an Anchorage Daily News story from the time of the fire, Flores' elderly father, Gonzalo Flores, 70, was displaced by the fire and was found dead near trash bins in the neighborhood of Fairview later in December 2011. Gonzalo Flores was apparently not in the apartment when it burned, it says.

After the fire, the Red Cross offered to help the family with housing, but they decided to stay with other family members, according to the ADN article.
